PRACTICE

In this episode

On the 240th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith and Dave Anderson are joined by Patrick Geoffrion-Amorim. Patrick, a native of Montreal, lives with his wife in Toronto.

Patrick was thrilled to converse with Dave Anderson for the first time. Patrick is a young passionate coach who understands the benefits of circulating around veteran coaches.

In addition to working with Steve, Patrick has also spent a great deal of time with Danny Cooper, Frank Hornig, Richard Hernandez and Miron Mann. Like Dave, these four individuals thoroughly understand the depth and educational merit behind the GreatBase Tennis curriculum.

Steve, Dave, and Patrick review thoughts pertaining to practice. The GreatBase Tennis curriculum was formulated over a ten-year period (1980s), during which Steve and his students practiced tennis teaching in a lab setting.

Practice may be the most important word connected with achievement in all sports.

show notes

In this episode of the Great Base Tennis Podcast, we dive deep into the intricacies of effective practice in the sport of tennis with expert insights from Patrick Geoffrion Amorim and Dave Anderson. Our conversation, recorded on St. Patrick’s Day, not only emphasizes the importance of relentless practice but also explores various fascinating anecdotes that illustrate the core principles of tennis coaching.

We begin by drawing attention to Patrick’s mother, a vibrant and dedicated coach who exemplifies the passion for tennis that is a recurring theme throughout our discussion. As Patrick shares anecdotes about her, we move swiftly into a reflection on the importance of nurturing a genuine love for the game in young players. I relate my own experiences, highlighting the stark difference in player development when a player shows innate motivation versus one that is coaxed into practice. This segues into the broader need for accountability and the discipline that comes with being part of a tennis program.

Last week’s discussion about David Goetz provides an interesting backdrop as we delve into the competitive nature of junior tennis. We recount the challenges faced by players in less favorable environments, yet emphasize the success stories that emerge from perseverance and dedication. An integral part of this conversation revolves around the notion of “practice making permanent.” We advocate for a structured approach to practice, incorporating elements that range from technical drills to situational play, ensuring players constantly evolve and adapt their skills.

The episode then pivots to discuss specific strategies for practice sessions, with a strong emphasis on the balance between fun and intensity. I draw parallels between tennis and other sports, advocating for the adoption of successful methodologies from various disciplines. We explore how players can enhance their skills through diverse drills and games that maintain engagement while concurrently training crucial aspects of their game, such as situational awareness and mental fortitude.

Throughout our rich dialogue, we discuss several practical approaches, including the monitoring of practice sessions, scoring systems, and the merits of competitive versus cooperative play. We emphasize the significance of understanding body language, cultivating a positive atmosphere, and ensuring that practice conditions mimic real match scenarios as closely as possible.

As our conversation unfolds, we reflect on the follow-through stages of practice. Each of us shares observations about common pitfalls faced by players and coaches alike, advocating for a mindset that prioritizes improvement over instant success. Patrick offers insights into the critical need for self-management and discipline, while Dave highlights the importance of not just accumulating practice hours but also investing those hours wisely to ensure true skill development.

In closing, we reiterate the vital message that while practice can sometimes be tedious, it is crucial for long-term success in tennis. Fostering passion, setting clear goals, and maintaining a dedicated work ethic are the cornerstones we believe will guide players toward achieving their dreams. This episode is a heartfelt reminder that in tennis, as in life, the journey of practice is where the real growth happens.
